The Evolution of a Mood Board

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with a designer?

We are sitting down today to chat with you about our process here at Based in Design.

Once a client (you!) contacts us with questions about your home, we schedule a time to meet up via FaceTime, Skype, Google Hangouts, or just a phone call, whatever is easiest for their schedule and questions!  This meeting is completely free if you decide to utilize our services.  Throughout the call, we chat about what the things that are important to you, what your goals are for your space, what you will need for your project.  It’s vital for us to spend some time together, enabling our designer to get to know you and your personal style.

After the personal interview, we send out both a contract and a client questionnaire.  The contract is a bit lengthy, but it’s our blanket one from small projects to entire home renovations!  In easy terms, it allows us to use photos of your home (OPSEC regarded always!) or snippets of the project in our social media and/or portfolio and is an agreement to pay on time for services rendered.  But the real fun part is the questionnaire!  We suggest you and your partner filling these out separately.  It provides for great conversation and ability to see what each other’s priorities are in your home.  It helps Based in Design get to know you even more than our interview and enables you to write down everything in a logical order.  It also includes some of the more nitty gritty information on your home that we won’t go over in detail on our first meeting.

After those documents are received, we begin the project!  The first steps will vary based on your needs.

  • A color scheme appointment will be a  relatively short turn time, in which you will receive a custom color layout within a weeks time.  We choose colors that seamlessly transition throughout your home, furnishing several colors that all work together that you can mix and match without hesitation.
  • Furniture and accessory requests have a short turn time as well, with options for selections generally ending up in your inbox within a couple of days.
  • For larger projects, such as room designs, your designer will begin by sending you a mood board.  A mood board is a visual representation of the design style that they envision for your project. It’s very important to communicate with your designer on your likes and dislikes in this initial mood board!  Be open with them and adjust the items that don’t fit your needs or style, so they can better serve you.  Often, they get you spot on!

Once a mood board has been approved, the designer will then send you options for each item in a similar style in your requested price range.  Then, all you have to do is choose!  The items will be invoiced and shipped directly to your home.  All shipping charges are included, making the process simple for you, our client.
